He grew his father’s business rapidly with his skills. In 1979 his business included about 30 metro are and also one in Duluth. In same year chain of his business was sold to “National Tea Co.” But Applebaum continued to working for them. After sometime all chain was again sold to “Gateway Foods”. D. B. Reinhart (CEO of Gateway Foods) and Sid Applebaum together grew the Applebaum’s supermarket and they made second-largest grocery chain in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area after applying Applebaum’s idea to start “Rainbow Foods” by changing some of the old Applebaum stores to the new one. This new chain started on October 1, 1983. He was remain the president of Rainbow Foods when ownership changes until 1996. In following year of 1997 he bought four Holiday Foods store in the city Plymouth, Bloomington, Fridley and Burnsville. After 18 month this all are sold to “Supervalu” and later converted to “Cub foods store”. He almost worked until last week of life. He won many awards and was happily involved in Twin Cities community. One of his son mentioned that Applebaum helped to run the St. Paul Winter Carnival and the Olympic Festival.
